Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda
He was elected by the Parliament for a five-year term in
1966. Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda became the first president of
the new Republic of Malawi. On July 6, 1971, he was
sworn in as life president of the republic pursuant to a
constitutional amendment adopted in November 1970.
Dr. Banda was born in Kasungu District in the central
region of Malawi in about 1906. It was vaguely confirmed
by recorded documents that he was born in 1896. He
was educated in the United States at the Wilberforce
Academy, Ohio; the University of Indiana; the University of
Chicago; and Meharry Medical College, Tennessee,
where he became a medical doctor in 1937. From there
he traveled to Britain and continued his medical studies at
Edinburgh University. He practised medicine in the United
Kingdom and Ghana. He returned to Malawi, then called
Nyasaland, to become politically active for independence
from colonial rule. On February 1, 1963, he became
Nyasaland's first prime minister, under the Malawi
Congress Party, and the first African prime minister in
central and southern Africa. As life president, he strived to
create agricultural self-sufficiency, high educational
standards, and a better societal role for women. He died
on November 25, 1997 at a reported age of 101.

The Gold Coast had been among the wealthiest and most
socially advanced areas in Africa, with schools, railways,
hospitals, social security and an advanced economy. Under
Nkrumah’s leadership, Ghana adopted some socialistic
policies and practices. Nkrumah created a welfare system,
started various community programs, and established
schools. He ordered the construction of roads and bridges
to further commerce and communication. To improve public
health in villages, tap water systems were installed, and
concrete drains for latrines were constructed. With perhaps
Nkrumah's biggest success in this area coming with his
significant influence in the founding of the Organization of
African Unity. The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) or
Organisation de l'Unité Africaine (OUA) was established on
25 May 1963. Ghana became a charter member of the
Organization of African Unity in 1963. It was disbanded on
9 July 2002 by its last chairperson, South African President
Thabo Mbeki, and replaced by the African Union.

Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe
He was born on November 16, 1904 and died on May 11, 1996.
He is usually referred to as Nnamdi Azikiwe, or, informally and
popularly, as "Zik", was one of the leading figures of modern
Nigerian nationalism and the first President of Nigeria, holding
the position throughout the Nigerian First Republic.
Governor-General Azikiwe studied in Storer College, Howard,
Lincoln, Pennsylvania and Columbia universities. He has
degrees in Philosophy, Anthropology, History, and Political
Science.
He graduated from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania in 1930. He
obtained a masters degree in 1933 from a prestigious Ivy League
institution, the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as an
instructor at Lincoln University before returning to Africa. He
taught History and Political Science.
His time in politics spanned most of his adult life and he was
referred to by admirers as "The Great Zik of Africa". His motto in
politics was "talk I listen, you listen I talk".
The writings of Azikiwe spawned a philosophy of African liberation
Zikism, which identifies five concepts for Africa's movement
towards freedom: spiritual balance, social regeneration,
economic determination, mental emancipation, and political
resurgence.
