As my daughters grow up, I would love for them to look around and see that the world if full of good
people.   I want them to know that despite the media images that create a fear and distrust of people
of color, that there are good, decent and trustworthy people who have positive self-esteem and set
very high expectations for themselves. I realize that there are numerous groups, societies and clubs
that I could affiliate with that could make this a doable feat. I also realize that if each one of "us"
reaches another one to spread positive and uplifting messages it could increase the odds even
greater! I believe that it is time that we stop waiting for some "great and visible politician, celebrity or
entertainer" to tell us what to do.

I believe that we can do it one baby at a time. I believe that we need to stop talking so much and that
we just need to do it. We just need to create a vision. We just need to take the necessary baby steps
towards this vision each year. We just need to do it for our future...without a vision we will perish.  That
is what HBCU kidz is all about.  Positive images, positive messages and positive results through
proactive people.  My mom's life inspires me, and I pray that my life inspires my daughters.

"When we first got started...I used to get a
lot of questions and comments on what
HBCU kidz is all about..."

"In a nutshell, here is what I believe. I have
two lovely daughters.   I love them, and I care
about their future. I truly believe what is
written in
Psalms 92: 12-14. "

12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
   they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the LORD,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green, (Psalm 92:12-14, New International Version, ©2011)
"I pray daily that my munchkins are granted a
productive life similar to that of a cherished tree
... have strong roots, bear delicious fruit, provide
a refuge for the needy and ultimately be
fashioned into something valuable that helps
build up a society. I recognize that how realistic
this dream is lies in what steps I take today to
prepare the soil and plant the seeds."
My mom was one of the biggest Education Fans that I have ever known
personally. She always had a ton of books by her bedside, and believed in
the importance of continual learning.  This love of learning was successfully
passed on to her from her father, Eddie B. Gilliam.  He was an
ex-sharecropper who successfully launched his own farm while supporting
all  9 of his children to graduate from high school.  My mom pictured above
was the eldest child and graduated high school class valedictorian.

Mommy later became a student at HBCU Virginia Union before she stopped
to marry and raise a family.  She ultimately returned to school and completed
her degree in nursing while I was in elementary school.  She lived a very
fruitful life and was an excellent role model for me.  Her younger brother, Joe,
would go on to become the family's 1st HBCU alumn when he graduated
with his degree from Virginia State University.  My sister graduated from
Hampton University in 1970 and my brother Bernie followed in my uncle's
footsteps upon graduation from Virginia State University in 1975.  Uncle Joe,
my mom, Bernie, my cousin Angie and I are pictured below.

Our family tradition lives on!  I vow to commit my time, talent and energy to
encourage others to promote education in the eternal HBCU spirit.  You see,
just like sports fans are not just athletes, an
Education Fan is not limited to
being someone who completes a college degree.

Education Fans enthusiastically inspire, uplift, support or cheer on others
who strive to learn life's important lessons."
