FINAL THOUGHTS AND TAKE AWAYS FROM CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS
SUMMARY: As a community we must work together, work smart and work hard.
"awesome conference call last night to discuss simple strategies parents can use at home to help improve
the likelihood that their child is competent in higher level mathematics. It was a great experience hearing
from so many concerned and loving parents who collectively had awesome solutions to share with one
another. We confirmed our own beliefs that we do not need to WAIT for a politician to help our children...we
have all the tools we need to do the job-TIME MANAGEMENT."
"Parents must proactively work with the Guidance counselors recommendations for advanced math"
"Pronunciation of the names can be a deterrent for some because if the class sounds hard...the
coursework must be really hard. Names of the mathematics are intimidating in itself."LOL
"It seems that the media is developing a standardized product for “consumption”. Time spent watching
BET/MYSPACE/TV is more negative and is being programmed to shut down thinking. Has them in a no-
thinking zone. Kids today don’t even tap into this unique ability from animals!"
"As a grandparent, I make it a point to take the kids to the park because this is the only exercise they get
from Video games and other sedentary activity that detracts from enjoying math problems"
"We are seeing children who are not taught to be creators. We need to query then on what they are feeling
and spend more quality time. Too many parents are caught into the rat race. Children are running around
the neighborhood with little guidance and instruction."
"We must catch them 0-5 years old. Whatever we put into at the right time and right order.
Like baking a cake. Put all the ingredients on the table. We have got to make sure the recipe is as
prescribed. Teach them not to be so fearful and to be confident in their abilities".
"Some children...in the very basics of math are not proficient such as adding or subtracting in the head vs.
on fingers. Drives feelings that they do not need advanced math because they don’t see it applied in their
daily life. They ask is success in life really contingent upon knowing advanced math?"
Discussed several ideas that make math less of a frightening subject.
For example-Introduce in a fun way the names of advanced math earlier before they become afraid
- Addition, subtraction, Circles,Squares,Triangles, etc.
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Trigometry
- PreCalculus
- Calculus
"A very easy to understand collection text books should be purchased and used as references for the logical
steps or standardized guidelines or methodologies. Should not be dependent on instructor. 1+1=2 all day."
Group concluded with challenges in reaching more parents. The cycle of welfare is it an end goal or a
safety net? The pursuit of better life? The importance of independence? Parents today must be active
in the process.
"I’ve lived the Katrina thing. U cannot be dependent for someone else to do for U. People must be confident
enough to think and apply knowledge for the good of their families."
